Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His being was mostly pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of rams.

Their gentle baas and the whispering of the website gales across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.

Stories of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.

One afternoon he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but found no wolf.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
